The LUG/IP Hardware Special Interest Group (SIG) meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 PM in the Hamilton (NJ) Public Library.

The SIG focuses on hardware issues relating to using Linux. The meetings are typically less structured than the general LUG/IP meetings, allowing for increased interaction between members.

If you need help getting Linux to run on your hardware, the SIG may just be for you!

Members bring computers and other hardware and help each other out with any difficulties they may be having getting Linux installed and functioning properly.

The SIG also often devotes time to general Linux, Open Source Software and other related discussions.

For more information about the SIG., contact the SIG coordinator, Chris Leyon chrisleyon@lugip.org.

LOPSA-NJ: January Meeting Find the Correct Fudge Factor: Implementing Accurate Network Time Protocol Servers!

Date: Thursday January 7 2010
Time: 7:00 PM - 7:20 PM - Social Time
7:20 PM - 7:25 PM - LOPSA-NJ Business and Announcements
7:25 PM - 7:30 PM - LOPSA-NJ Professional IT Community Conference (PICC) News
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM - Main Presentation

Join LOPSA-NJ as Jon Meek presents his latest experiments in highly accurate, low-cost, NTP servers. These experimental servers are based on GPS but use multiple methods to verify that they have the correct fudge factor.

Jon will present his poster, "Validating a Stratum 1 Network Time Protocol Server Find the Correct Fudge," recently seen at USENIX/LISA'09, with corrections, as well as disclosing his top-secret grandiose future plans, including:

+ using his new hot air re-work station to replace crystal oscillators
from motherboards in the servers

+ replacing the crystal with a fancy frequency synthesizer that has
an oven-controlled oscillator

+ using a GPS that outputs a 10 MHz clock signal as the base for
the clock

As Jon recently said on the LOPSA-NJ mailing list, "Stable system clock -> Better NTP stability."

It's clear that Jon has been a busy in his laboratory. We're all excited to see what he's cooked up!

Jon is a Senior Technical Lead at Pfizer with primary responsibilities in security, logging, Internet and third party connectivity, and network performance testing and monitoring. He joined American Cyanamid, a Pfizer predecessor company, 27 years ago is an experimental physicist to work on a project that required very accurate frequency measurements.

LOPSA-NJ is an organization in New Jersey formed to transfer professional knowledge among system administrators. LOPSA-NJ is not affiliated with any particular hardware or software vendor or company. Everyone is invited!

Join LOPSA-NJ as Joseph Kern talks about Disaster Recovery, Crisis Management, Leadership and Responsibility.

As sysadmin I worked in state of continuous disaster recovery for three years; I did this in countries that I had never before visited, and in situations that could be extremely stressful. I'd like to pass on what I've learned from my mistakes and my successes to a wider audience.

When I first started working as a sysadmin, I had enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Computer Systems Operator (3C0X1). It happened that I was assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron (1CBCS) in Germany. Over the next three years I would participate in 30 exercises and several real-world missions. What a way to start a career.

During this time I learned many things about myself and the nature of the sysadmin within a disaster recovery, crisis management, and leadership role. The recent events in Haiti, and the international response by many sysadmins and engineers (both civilian and military) has prompted me to share what I know.

During my talk I'll be covering practical, sometimes personal, advice in the following topics:

1. Disaster Recovery - Beyond Backups and Collocation, what to do when …
2. Extended Crisis Management - Troubleshooting in a troubled environment …
3. Leadership - Roles everyone can play
4 .Getting Involved - Civilian Agencies and your Local Community

I won't be talking about backups, tapes, or collocation. In fact I won't be talking about anything you can learn from a book; only through repeated failure and success. If you're brand new to the topic of disaster recovery or a seasoned veteran there's something in this talk for you.

BIO:

Joseph Kern has been a sysadmin since 2003; before that he lived the life of a bohemian king in the valleys and forests of Oregon.
